This summer I had the opportunity to work under Dr. Silvia Crivelli and Dr. Shokoufeh Mirzaei. I took part in their project of protein folding. I am really thankful for the experience because I came into the internship knowing nothing about biology and very little knowledge on programming and with this project I not only learned the basics of proteins and their functions, but I also learned machine learning techniques like Support Vector Machining and computer programs that we used to run the codes. I learned how to work within an R environment, which involves learning the language, in more depth and to also run in parallel using a supercomputer. Before working with Dr. Silvia Crivelli, I had no idea what a supercomputer was. I also learned how to work within my terminal to connect to the supercomputer, Carver, located in NERSC. Another program I became familiar with is Python. I completed Code Academy, an online learning website, in order to learn codes that can help me worth within Python. Overall, I am so glad to have been a part of the team and work within the larger goal of a scoring function.
